Stepping
out into the world of medieval combat recreation can, like any other
sport, be somewhat daunting. To start with where do you get all the
equipment you need, especially all that nice shiny armour? Well here
are your options:-
1)
Borrow it.
This makes a good way to start, allows you to try different styles and
work out what you need. We have spare equipment available at our training
sessions.
2)
Buy it new.
This can appear a little expensive until you compare the cost of a suit
of armour to something like a set of decent golf clubs! Having made
to measure armour will also ensure that it fits (loaner armour is guaranteed
to almost fit!)
3) Buy it second hand
This is cheaper than buying new but will it fit as well or be worn out
already?
4)
Make it yourself.
Requires time and effort but is rather fun! If the armour doesn't fit
you will then have no one to blame but yourself!
5) Any combination of the above (which is probably what you will wind
up doing)!
The
equipment page has links to some armourers
and armouring information and the articles
page has some articles on making armour and padding it to fit you.
The
Basic bits
Even
if you plan to borrow armour you will need to supply a few basic items:-
Footwear
Sturdy boots giving toe and ankle protection.
Belt
Most of our spare leg armour is designed to hang from a belt; if you
don't have one the armour will fall off (see sturdy boots above)!
Under
Cloths
Something you don't mind getting sweaty (this is a active sport)! T-shirt
and jeans or similar will work fine! Gamberson and padded hose are even
better....
Groin
Protection
A cricket box will work, though more the shaped martial arts or hockey
etc. ones are far more comfortable. Women obviously need a female one
(try a martial arts shop). For some reason no one seems to like lending
these out...
