West Dragonshire Summer Tournament

September 25-27, 2010

Boldre, New Forest, England

After a gap of a couple of years, the Shire of West Dragonshire is pleased to announce the revival of the traditional Summer Tournament event. Come join us in the New Forest, at the heart of our Shire, for a weekend of most excellent displays of skills at arms.

In addition to the traditional tournament, for the sword and the belt, we have added a couple of extra tournaments, including one for those who are just starting out in the field of martial activities.

The Event

Friday

Friday evening will be a time for gathering and socialising.  A light supper will be provided for those that wish it.  For those that don't, the pub next door, one of the oldest in the country, serves excellent ale and food.   There are also plenty of restaurants, pubs and takeaways in the nearby town of Lymington (< 2 miles).  Note that for part of the evening, we will be sharing the site with the local bowls club, who will be using one of the two halls until around 10pm.

Saturday

The day will be devoted to the various tournaments.  In no particular order, these will be:

Tournament of Flowers

This will run along the lines of the traditional mid-summer tournament of old.  Each fighter will be expected to challenge all who will accept  The prize of the belt will go to the fighter who wins the most challenges.  The prize of the sword will go to the fighter who, in the judgement of the ladies present, has conducted himself in the best traditions of courtesy and chivalry on the field.

Golden Tournament

This will be open to all fighters, but the prize of the Golden Sword will only be open to novice fighters - i.e. those who have held authorisation for one year or less (or, as admitted by the marshals).  The winner will be chosen by the general aclaim of the experienced fighters taking part or observing.

Warlord Tournament

The tournament will start with a one-on-one fight.  The winner will then get to select a warrior for his team, and will lead the next battle as two-on-two, and so on, until all warriors are selected.  The winner will be the one who can collect and command the best army.

The Battle

As time and terrain permit, the armies chosen in the Warlord Tournament will do battle for honour and glory.

Note that we are seeking sponsors from the nobility for each of the above tournaments, or any other that the sponsoring noble cares to suggest.  Please contact the Event Steward or the Knight Marshal.

Saturday evening will be dedicated to feasting and socialising, and, of course, the prize-giving.

Sunday

This will be a time for pick-up fights, training and cleaning the site, so that we can be out of there by 2pm.  Sunday would also be a good day for investigating the many sights of interest in the area.  Contact Lord Raphe for further information.

Note: The hall is in a small village, adjacent to the local church and recreation ground.  On Friday evening one of the two halls is booked for the regular meeting of the local bowls club (until 10pm).  We have the hall to ourselves for the rest of the weekend, but there are likely to be other people using the car park on Sunday morning to attend church.  Local people may also be using the playground and recreation field during the day, and may choose to observe us going about our business.  Please treat the area, the site and the locals with all due respect, keeping noise (and language) to a minimum, especially after 10pm.  Please, also, try to avoid leaving too many mundane items on view, openly displaying alcoholic beverages (unless inside suitable containers), and, if using parts of the field that are open to the public, keep your weapons and armour safely out of the way.

(Note from Raphe - "This is the first time I have held an event so close to home.  I would really like the locals to be very impressed with the way we conduct ourselves, so that we can use the site again, and maybe, persuade local landowners to allow us to use local woodland for grander-scale battles in the future.")

Location

Boldre War Memorial Hall
Pilley Hill
Pilley
Hampshire
SO41 5QG

Directions may be found here

This is a modern, well equipped village hall in the village of Pilley, in the heart of the New Forest. There are two halls, a good-sized kitchen, plus toilets and a shower (cunningly disguised as the baby-changing station).

There is parking for at least 30 cars, probably more, in addition to street parking.  The hall has a small outdoor area at the back, which will be used for the smaller tournaments.  The hall is adjacent to the local recreation field, so there is a larger space available for the bigger battles (provided we don't get in the way of the junior football league, who may be having a game at some point during the day).

Accommodation is crash space only, on the floor of the halls.  Bedding may be left in the smaller of the two halls during the day.  Depending on numbers, we may have to clear bedding away in the main hall during the day until after the feasting is done.

Smoking is not permitted anywhere inside the building.  Please use the designated receptacles for butts/ash.

Naked flames are allowed, provided that all table surfaces are protected from drips. We will be providing tablecloths.

Site opens at 6pm on the Friday and closes at 2pm on the Sunday.  The site is discreetly wet, but please keep bottles and cans out of obvious sight, especially outdoors.  We will be providing recycling facilities for bottles, cans, plastic bottles, cardboard etc.
